Ganghwado Island Tour, off the west coast, is the fifth largest island in Korea. The island was connected to the mainland in 1970 with the construction of the Ganghwagyo Bridge. Another larger bridge, Ganghwadaegyo Bridge, was built in 1997, making it easier than ever to travel to Ganghwado Island from Seoul and Incheon areas. The island is home to Chamseongdan Altar on top of Manisan Mountain on the southern coast. This is said to be where Dangun Wanggeom offered sacrificial rites to the heavens. Another important item of note on Ganghwado Island is the collection of stone dolmens, a UNESCO-recognized world heritage. Ganghwado Island has many famous local products, including the medicinally effective Ganghwa ginseng and hwamunseok, a mat woven with flower patterns. Hwamunseok is famous also as a representative traditional Korean product for its intricate handwork and designs.

It has been designated as a historic site as one of the representative burial customs of the Bronze Age. Using a large stone measuring 710cm in length, 260cm in height, and 550cm in width, it takes the form of a northern-style dolmen and serves as valuable research material for ancient history and archaeology. On November 29, 2000, during the 24th session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee held in Cairns, Australia, it was registered as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site along with the dolmens of Gochang and Hwasun, South Korea.
Jeondeungsa, in Gilsang-myeon, was founded in 381 during Goguryeo’s Three Kingdoms era. Though its later Goryeo history is less documented, it underwent renovations in 1266 and subsequent periods. Originally Jinjongsa, it was renamed Jeondeungsa by Princess Jeonghwagung in 1282, sponsoring the copying of sacred texts.
The Treasure Kanghwa Jeondeungsa Daewoongjeon, rebuilt in 1621 after fire damage, has a distinctive three-by-three layout and octagonal roof. Traces from the Byeonginyangyo battle (1866) adorn columns, and cultural treasures abound, including the Treasure Yaksa-jeon Hall and the Northern Song Dynasty’s Treasure Jeongjong Bell. Many items marked as cultural heritage by Incheon Metropolitan City are within the temple grounds.
Manisan is a sacred mountain where Dangun, Korea’s legendary founder, is said to have ruled. Legend speaks of a dragon’s ascent from this mountain, and it’s a place of gods, with 72 royal queens’ altars.
At Manisan’s summit is Chamseongdan Altar, where Dangun supposedly conducted celestial rituals. It’s also the “Mount of the People,” igniting the torch for the National Sports Festival and the ’88 World Disabled Olympics. Climbing 918 steps, you’ll witness stunning West Sea views and delicate floral patterns adorning Jeongsusa Temple’s Dharma Hall, built during Queen Seondeok’s Silla Dynasty.
Ganghwa’s premier beach attracts year-round visitors with its blend of tidal flats, sandy shores, and lush pine forests. High tide offers swimming in pristine waters; low tide, ecological exploration in expansive flats. The pine forest provides cooling respite on hot days.
Before reaching the ‘Dongmak’ sculpture on Dongmak Beach’s photo spot, explore the nearby Bunori Dondae (rock formation) for a panoramic view of Ganghwa’s southern tidal flats, with a chance to catch a stunning sunset if timed right.
